Our Stylist's Spring Favorites

"If it looks like it took you more than 20 min to get dressed, then you are missing the mark."

We sat down with celebrity stylist Jill Lincoln to talk about the season’s most exciting pieces, mastering California-Girl style and all the ways Velvet makes the perfect wardrobe.

V: What is the signature Velvet Women’s style, and why?

JL: Velvet isn't fussy or complicated. What’s great about it is you can really use them as a resource for all your everyday essentials. I’d say that look is cool, subtle and effortless.

V: What are 4-6 ways to master the laid back California Style?

JL: Master the art of layering. A tank under a tee, under a button down, under a cardigan. Add and remove according to what the day and weather calls for! Outfits should mostly be transitional day to night with just a simple changing of accessories.Dress for comfort, but make it cool. Sweats are fine for daytime activities, as long as you keep it elevated. Your look should convey “oh I just threw this on” and not “i just threw on the clothes I found on my floor.” For example, I love the look of a more fitted sweatpant paired with an oversized button down and ballet flats.Stay away from hard lines: no super tailored or edgy silhouettes. If it looks like it took you more than 20 min to get dressed, then you are missing the mark. Pieces should be relaxed enough to get from the beginning of the day to the end looking just as good as they started.

V: Whats your advice on how to create a wardrobe that stands the test of time?

JL: Build a wardrobe that works within itself. As a rule I try to make sure every piece I buy is  able to pair with at least 2 other pieces in my wardrobe. If I can’t imagine the new outfits I’ll create with it, it ‘s not worth the space in my closet.

JL: This dress radiates a California vibe any day, all day. Start out by wearing it over a bikini for a walk on the beach. Then, add lace up sandals and a cardigan for afternoon glass of wine or dress it up with a low heel for dinner.
JL: This top is so effortlessly cool. I love the cut of the sleeve because it is a little less exposed, which feels modern, but the gauzy fabric keeps it casual.
JL: Easy and refined in a nutshell. A trouser style in a comfy linen fabric is one of my favorite options when the temperature turns up. The cut is a bit looser, but the pockets and button waist makes them feel a bit more put together than the traditional drawstring option.
JL: This is the perfect layering piece for achieving a stylish, but not overly styled look. It comes in muted shades that are a perfect complement to my typically more neutral wardrobe.
